Demeter Rapeseed Oil

In the year 1924, Austrian philosopher and anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner laid the foundation for the biodynamical approach to farming in his lectures on agriculture. Nowadays, the Demeter label is present in over 50 countries around the globe. Demeter farmers and producers by far exceed the requirements of the EU-Eco-regulation. Not only the quality of the resulting foodstuffs, but also nature benefits from this practice.

Our Demeter Rapeseed oil derives from the Hungary’s Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok region. Today a rather dry area, up until the early 19th century it had been boggy territory composed of a multitude of small, shallow bodies of water and thick forests. Favored by both its outstanding soil quality and the relatively high number of sun hours attained annually, up to 80% of the area are being cultivated nowadays. Aside from sunflowers and rapeseed, also wheat, spelt, millet and corn are being grown on the farm’s acreage of roughly 1,700 metric hectares. The remaining area serves as feeding ground for the dairy cows as well as for a small herd of Mangalitsa pigs. Since the year 2000, the business has been certified for organic farming, eight years later the conversion to husbandry in compliance with Demeter guidelines took place.
